Orthodontics

Different orthodontic options to suit you and your lifestyle

With advances in technology and techniques, the number of ways to discreetly straighten your teeth is expanding. At Weybridge Orthodontics, we have a wide range of orthodontic treatment systems for adults and children.

orthodontics-in-weybridgeIn 2017, the latest orthodontics in Weybridge offer a choice between fixed braces or removable aligners. When you come to see us for a thorough consultation, we will be able to talk you through all of your treatment options, taking into account your dental needs and desired outcome, your lifestyle and your budget.

Health as well as beauty

Orthodontic treatments have health benefits as well as aesthetic ones. This is because straight teeth are easier to keep clean and free from dental plaque than crowded or crooked teeth, reducing the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

If your jaws don’t meet each other properly, you can experience problems with biting and chewing food, and this can lead to headaches and migraines and night-time grinding. Orthodontic appliances for such issues can be very effective.

Our menu of appliances for orthodontics in Weybridge

Our dentist will run through the various appliances and find the right one for your needs when you come to use for a consultation. Here are some of the options that you may be offered.

Incognito braces are different from the fixed braces we all know, most notably because they are fitted onto the tongue-side (lingual) of the teeth rather than the front of the teeth. Having the brackets and wires inside the teeth means that they are hidden from view, invisible in daily life, unless someone gazes right down into your mouth when you are laughing. Secondly, the brackets are made from a gold alloy rather than metal or ceramics. The brackets are custom-made to fit the contours of the lingual sides of your teeth.

Invisalign

As far as orthodontics in Weybridge go, Invisalign has proved to be one of the most popular systems. This treatment is based not on brackets and wires, but on a series of clear, removable aligners that gently shift the teeth into a straighter position.

These transparent aligners are also very thin (0.3mm), making them invisible to the casual observer, and because they are removable this means they are easy to keep clean and so are your teeth.

Orthodontics in Weybridge: metal braces versus Invisalign

Both traditional metal braces and Invisalign are viable and effective options for most teeth alignment issues in Weybridge. Orthodontics,

however, is a complex area and your dentist may indicate one treatment over another, depending on the severity of your crooked teeth and bite issues.

orthodontics-in-weybridgeAt Weybridge Orthodontics in Surrey, we realise that each patient’s needs are unique and we do our best to give you a healthy and beautiful smile. Our patients can choose between traditional metal braces with a modern twist or Invisalign clear braces.

Metal braces

With modern technology, braces have come a long way and are much lighter and more versatile than they used to be. Metal braces with coloured elastic bands is a new, fun and aesthetically pleasing way to straighten your teeth.

Metal braces have been used for decades in orthodontics to fix the alignment of teeth. Of course, the materials and technology used have changed throughout years, but the mechanism remains the same. Metal braces consist of fixed brackets that have a wire running through them moving your teeth to the correct positions in your mouth.

As opposed to Invisalign, metal braces are able to correct even very complicated issues of crooked and misaligned teeth.

However, with metal braces come various dietary restrictions and a constant commitment to brushing your teeth thoroughly to help keep your mouth healthy.

Invisalign

If you do not want to wear metal braces and wish to enjoy the convenience of being able to remove your braces when eating and brushing your teeth, Invisalign may be the right treatment for you.

Invisalign aligners are clear, therefore most people won’t even notice you are wearing them. Since the aligners are removable, there are no food restrictions with Invisalign. At the same time, you can remove the aligners if you wish to brush and floss your teeth, therefore maintaining good oral hygiene.

However, Invisalign cannot treat severely crooked teeth and is not suitable for children.

Modern orthodontics are changing the face of straighter teeth

There was a time when only very misaligned teeth and bites received the benefit of straightening treatments. And when they did, it involved many months, possibly years of painful and unsightly ‘mouth full of metal’ braces that no one could miss as soon as the wearer opened their mouths.

orthodontics-in-WeybridgeBack in the 1970s and 80s braces were synonymous with the goofy awkwardness of adolescence, and you couldn’t be considered an adult until those damn ‘train tracks’ were off your teeth and people could understand what you were saying again. No one was going through that unless they absolutely had to, even if they’d have loved to have those front teeth straightened.

That was then, this is now, and in Weybridge, orthodontics have come a long way. At Surrey Braces, we can offer several different systems of orthodontics to straighten out teeth in grown up mouths.

First up in the menu of orthodontics in Weybridge is Clarity ADVANCED Ceramic Brackets. These are a revolutionary take on the traditional bracket and wire braces, with extra small brackets made from clear orthodontic ceramics. They look great, are comfortable and treatment times vary from 18 months to two years.

Secondly, Weybridge orthodontics offers Damon Clear, another take on the clear bracket and wire system that has a passive slide mechanism to reduce friction and allow teeth to move more quickly and comfortably.

If you’d rather no one can get a glimpse of your bracket and wire braces, then Surrey Braces can fit you with Incognito. These are lingual braces that fit behind the teeth rather than over them, so they are completely hidden from view.

It’s not all brackets and wires with orthodontics in Weybridge, however; we also use Invisalign, a system based on incredibly thin transparent resin trays that fit over the teeth and move them in increments by exerting pressure. A new tray is used every two weeks and treatments take between 12 and 48 trays. The trays are removable for eating and cleaning.

Some systems are more suitable for some problems than others, so it is important that you come for a free initial consultation with us so we can discuss your needs and find the system that will best suit them.

Do I need orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontics in Weybridge is helping patients to straighten their crooked or wonky teeth and enhance their self-confidence. Orthodontics mainly involves the use of braces, retainers, and aligners as a way of shifting a patient’s teeth into the correct position.

orthodontics-treatmentWho might benefit from orthodontics in Weybridge?

You may benefit from orthodontic treatment if you have any of the following dental problems:

  • Wonky teeth
  • Overcrowding, whereby there are too many teeth for the space in your mouth
  • Large gaps between teeth, opposite to overcrowding
  • Bad oral hygiene or plaque.

Orthodontics can help to gradually manipulate the teeth into moving in a particular direction, be it forward, backward, or to the side. Braces are the most popular form of orthodontics, particularly in teenagers and young adults; however, for older patients there are other options available, such as retainers and aligners. These both work in the same way as traditional braces; however, they are more subtle and are not fixed to the teeth, allowing you to remove them for special events, eating, and brushing. They usually have to be worn for around 20 hours per day, and do not affect the patient’s ability to speak.

The benefits of orthodontics in Weybridge well outweigh any negatives. The treatment is temporary, and the results are more permanent. You will need to continue to have check-ups with your dentist after the treatment has finished, so that they can check the progress of your teeth and also keep an eye on your oral hygiene.Plaque can build up between wonky teeth and make brushing difficult; this often means that food gets stuck between teeth and contributes to bad breath. Plaque is a build up on the teeth that can in the long term cause tooth decay.

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a treatment used to improve the appearance, position, and overall function of crooked or wonky teeth. You may look for orthodontics in Weybridge if you are wanting to straighten your teeth and move odd teeth into a better position.

orthodontics-in-weybridgeDentists who specialise in orthodontics are known as orthodontists. Here at Weybridge Orthodontics we employ highly skilled professionals who will be able to talk you through your needs and concerns and arrange the right orthodontic treatment to help you.

What does orthodontic treatment involve?

Orthodontics in Weybridge uses a range of devices such as a braces to correct the position of the teeth. Every patient is different and treatment will depend on the problems with your teeth. It is best to contact your dentist for an appointment to discuss options first.

In some cases, such as with overcrowding, it may be necessary for some teeth to be removed in order to achieve the end result. If there are too many teeth in your mouth, then braces will not have the right effect, as there will be nowhere to push the excess teeth to.

Orthodontics treatment in Weybridge take any where between 18 and 24 months, depending on the problem and condition of the teeth.

Who benefits from orthodontic treatment?

Most people who suffer from crowded or crooked teeth, or have teeth that don’t meet correctly when they bite can benefit from orthodontics in Weybridge. If these types of dental problems are left untreated it can cause more damage and put a strain on jaw muscles. In extreme cases, abnormal development of the teeth and jaw can affect the shape of the face.

Orthodontics in Weybridge are popular with adults; however, a large proportion of patients are young teenagers whose teeth are still developing, making them the ideal age for orthodontic treatment. The teeth are easier to manipulate whilst they are still developing, and the treatment is less likely to be as long when you are younger, compared to if you had orthodontic treatment as an adult.

When you come into our practice we want you to feel relaxed and at ease. We know that everything we do to help you is important and the results are long-term, so we want you to feel like you can rely on us.  Having healthy teeth is key to a confident smile and good health in general.

weybridge-orthodonticsI don’t want traditional braces

We know that many people, especially adults, are worried about getting the traditional ‘train-track’ braces, but due to modern ‘biting-edge’ technology we have a variety of options to offer. In this instance, we would like you to consider the advantages of Invisalign. Weybridge Orthodontics is proud to provide this treatment and we have many satisfied patients to justify our opinion.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign are a clear, removable brace that is replaced every two weeks. Each brace is a different step in the procedure and designed slightly differently to continue the treatment process. Initially a mould is created and sent away to our laboratory to be analysed in order to make the Invisalign. Weybridge Orthodontics will then invite you back to our practice for your fitting. You will be shown the course of the treatment, with our 3D computer models, that will put your teeth where they belong.

There are lots of things you can still do

Can you still play a musical instrument? Yes.

Can you still play sports? Yes.

Can you still eat what you want? Yes.

Whenever you need to, you can simply remove your Invisalign braces and put them back in when you’re done. People often have problems brushing their teeth with traditional braces; you won’t. If you feel you need to take out your Invisalign for a social or business event, you can, but day-to-day you can wear them and people may not even notice.

Are they expensive?

Invisalign are not the cheapest option and you will need to pay a deposit to have them made; however, we offer interest-free monthly repayments over 18 to 24 months. Check our fee guide for prices and feel free to contact us for more information. We want you to finish your treatment feeling happy with the results. So if you want Invisalign in Weybridge we hope you will contact us soon.

Visit Weybridge Orthodontics to meet your dental team

It takes a great team to make a good dental practice and, at Weybridge Orthodontics, we pride ourselves on having fabulous people from the moment you walk through the door. Most orthodontic treatment means quite a few visits to the dentist and so you want to be comfortable and happy talking to the people you will be interacting with for six months or more.

weybridge-orthodonticsOnce this less tangible consideration is taken care of, you can move on to the practicalities of having your teeth straightened. The range of braces and aligners we have on offer at Weybridge Orthodontics means that we can tailor a treatment to meet your needs and sometimes offer you more than one recommendation so you can make the choice.

If you have any questions then you can ask them when you visit. It is great if you look around to get basic information so you know what to ask. However, your orthodontist will use their skills and experience to guide your initial consultation so that everything gets covered.

Things that they might ask you about include what your budget expectations are. Whilst some treatments for some ages are available on the NHS, many are not, especially if the procedure has mainly cosmetic benefits. However, your practitioner can talk to you about spreading any costs incurred.

Another important consideration for you may be the way your treatment looks. If you need to look smart for work or dazzling for an upcoming celebration then tell your orthodontist this when you visit. Depending on what you need, they might be able to recommend options that are clear or invisible. It may be that clear aligners are an option for you,if you value discretion, because they are very hard to see from the outside.

You may have some concerns about discomfort during treatment. While this is an inevitable side-effect of orthodontics for many people, your dentist can advise on ways to mitigate it, the length of time you can expect to experience sensations, and types of treatment where the reported discomfort is less.

At Weybridge Orthodontics, we want to talk to you as much as you want about your treatment and then stick with you all the way through.

Do you need an orthodontist?

At Weybridge Orthodontics, we are committed to the care and dental health of our patients. In order to ensure that you receive the service you want, we listen to your needs and ask you about your priorities when it comes to realigning your teeth or your bite. For some people, it may be essential that they have a budget option, for others aesthetics might be a bigger concern. As everyone is different, we make sure that we take note of what is important to you and suggest options accordingly.

orthodontics-in-weybridgeYou will normally be referred to the orthodontist at Weybridge Orthodontics by your dentist if you need and/or want to have your teeth straightened or something about your bite corrected. They will take a look at your mouth and make a plan with you for moving forward and having treatment.

All orthodontic treatments have the movement of teeth in common and they all do it in more or less the same way, which is by exerting consistent pressure on the teeth until they start to move in the desired direction. This happens because the pressure sends a message to a nerve attached to your teeth, which then tells the bone on one side of the root area to start breaking down and allowing the tooth to move. At the same time, the bone begins to build up in the space left behind – it’s a miraculous process.

The differences between the treatments on offer at Weybridge Orthodontics tend to be the amount of force exerted and how it is achieved by different types of braces and the focus of the treatment i.e. which teeth and in which direction and length of time that it takes. Movement of the teeth takes the same amount of time, but it can take a shorter or longer time to get the result you want, depending on how extensive the issue is. Braces can also be fixed or removable, although even removable braces need to be worn for a set amount of time per day to ensure they are effective and are sending a steady message to the teeth.

Braces on the National Health Service

Does your child qualify for orthodontic treatment on the National Health Service?

Here at Weybridge Orthodontics we offer treatment on the National Health Service, according to the government guidelines, which were introduced by the Department of Health in 2006.

orthodontics-in-weybridgeThe good news is that Weybridge Orthodontics can offer every child under the age of 18 a free assessment to find out if they are in need of orthodontic treatment, and also if they qualify for treatment on the National Health Service.

The Department of Health has issued an Index of Orthodontic Needs (IOTN) in order to help us at Weybridge Orthodontics find out if each child is eligible for treatment on the NHS.

Firstly, treatment on the NHS is only for children whose dental health will be improved by orthodontics. It is not given to children who want orthodontic treatment for purely cosmetic reasons.

If your child is missing a tooth, or has impacted teeth, has significantly crowded teeth, abnormally prominent teeth, or something wrong with their bite that is causing problems in some way, then there is a good chance that they will be able to receive treatment on the NHS. Please bring them in to Weybridge Orthodontics for a free assessment.

Sadly, even if your child does have a clear clinical need that qualifies them for treatment with Weybridge Orthodontics, there is only a limited amount of funding available for orthodontic treatments on the NHS. This restriction means that even if your child qualifies for treatment, they will likely have to a join a waiting list before treatment can start. At Weybridge Orthodontics, we do our best to keep waiting lists as short as possible, including continual consultations with the NHS local area managers.

If your child does qualify for NHS but you do not want to wait keep them waiting on a list, then we also offer private treatments for children. Prices start at £1354.00 for Clarity or Damon Q braces. We offer a 0% interest monthly repayment scheme and if you got to our prices page, we have a calculator to help you work out how much the treatment you think is best for your child is likely to cost.

  • Ask your orthodontist for a copy of your treatment plan and any special conditions pertaining to your case.
  • Book an initial appointment with us, and then come in, so that we can discuss your treatment so far and draw up a plan to complete it.

We will also do our best to continue with your original treatment plan. In most cases, Weybridge Orthodontics can continue your treatment with the orthodontic appliances you had fitted at home, but we may need to use different wire, brackets or appliances.

The cost of completing your treatment can vary, but we will you give a clear idea of how much you can expect to spend with us.
